If you’ve experienced trauma or an overwhelming life experience, certain memories may still feel present and can activate an undesirable emotional response. This can show up as a threatened sense of safety, anxiety, depression, panic, emotional overwhelm, negative beliefs about yourself, or a constant sense of being on edge. Even when you know logically that the trauma is in the past, your body and nervous system may continue to respond as though it is happening in the present.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that is designed to help the brain process traumatic experiences in a healthier way; supporting healing from mental and emotional trauma. EMDR helps increase emotional safety, strengthen your ability to regulate emotions, and shift unhelpful beliefs shaped by past experiences. This process does not erase what happened; rather, it allows memories to lose their emotional intensity so they no longer control how you live your life.

Traumatic experiences can interrupt the brain’s natural healing process. EMDR helps “unstick” those memories associated with distress so they can be reprocessed, allowing you to remember what happened without feeling overwhelmed by it. This is done through bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements, tapping, or tones) while you briefly focus on aspects of a distressing memory and the emotions associated with it. The goal is to diminish the distress these memories cause, facilitating emotional desensitization to the distressing memory.
With every EMDR session, the memory feels less intense and emotionally charged. It loses its power to trigger strong reactions and becomes connected to more adaptive, compassionate beliefs about yourself.
